PHOTOGRAPHY / COLOR
I had always played around with color even when learning classic black and white. Sometimes I would use 35 mm color slide film as a sort of trail for my ideas before loading up the big view camera. When I began to travel more extensively on longer journeys, smaller cameras were my choice. For some reason it was slide film I began to use.
Later in making composites and illustrations this would become a blessing as I had thousands of slides to draw image parts and pieces from. At one point I was carrying two small cameras each with a very sharp 35mm Zeiss lens. One had color and the other black and white. I still was seeing in black and white but found that sometimes color worked best. After my trip to Bali my infatuation with color took hold. With the advent of digital photography and the digital darkroom we can shoot in color and still make it black and white if that is more suitable for the image. When I look at certain images that I have made in color I can say that color is a more fitting medium for them.
